Project experience

"Information and Communication Technologies in Vocationally Oriented Language Learning"

ECML Project 1.3.1 in ECML first medium-term programme 2000-2003.The main achievement of the workshop series was the production of the GRAZVOLL website. It provides an introduction to the use of ICT in VOLL: theoretical underpinning, suggestions for teacher training, sections on data driven learning, web literacy, use of platforms etc., together with case studies illustrating applications of programs described.

PRACTICERT: Certification of skills and competences gained during work placements abroad.
Based upon the CEFR and using an adapted version of the European Language Portfolio, this LEONARDO project produced the European Vocational Qualifications (Languages) in 6 languages = a VOLL-oriented version of the ELP as a publication ("PRACTIFOLIO") and website; a handbook for trainers; a manual for evaluators, including video recordings for rater training.

The Impact of Information and Communications Technologies on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and on the Role of Teachers of Foreign Languages - a report commissioned by the Directorate General of Education and Culture (European Commission), 2003.

Expertise in the topic of the proposed project

Practice in the field

I have been involved in projects concerned with ICT and the training of foreign language teachers at a European level for over ten years, having been involved in all the CDCC/ECML training seminars related to this subject with a VOLL bias from the outset. Above all, the experience as coordinator of the ECML GRAZVOLL project (see: ) proides a useful background for this project bid. Since 1989 I have acted in a major capacity in similar projects financed within the context of the EU LEONARDO and SOCRATES (LINGUA) programmes. I have initiated, cordinated and/or participated in over twenty CDCC or EU projects related to the training of language teachers training since 1978.

Other relevant experience

I coordinated the work of a group of major providers of language teaching in adult education in Europe which culminated in the definition of aims for the qualification and certification of foreign language teachers in adult and continuing education “EUROLTA”. EUROLTA now provides qualifications for foreign language teachers throughout Europe
